Step to the Light
From the Artist's Perspective:

Why a set of stairs? For me, they stir my curiosity about what might be at the top if I am willing to accept the invitation. This invitation is not printed on a doormat, but the stairs provide the unwritten offer. I would suspect that we all have had similar opportunities, have seen great views at various times in our lives, and were very grateful for the experience. Views change as we pursue our quest for the top. Some of it has to do with different angles and some has to do with the light. The light changes our perceptions as it filters through the branches. What we first perceive as dank and dark is now transformed by the sun into warmth and light. This is freely given for us to enjoy as we accept the invitation to journey. There is nothing new about paths and stairs being used as symbols for life's journey. As we embark, God offers the invitation and provides the steps that lead us to new viewpoints while giving the "Light," through the Spirit of His Son, to go with us as we climb. The "Light" will never change. He is constant like the light of the sun, but everything will take on new perspectives for us because of Him. He calls us upward for the prize that is at the top. We may plan the course, but God will direct our steps, and we will see more clearly and purely, through Christ, as we near the top where we will see God. So, accept His invitation, and enjoy the climb as you Step to The Light.

From the Pastor's Perspective:

Due to my love for the outdoors, coupled with my intrinsic inquisitive nature, this painting naturally captured my attention. Initially, my eyes were drawn to the highlighted steps in the foreground. Those steps quickly propelled my attention to the mysterious light in the background. I sensed an urgency to "explore" what was on the other side of the hill and found myself longing to fulfill that inquisitive side of my being. As my eyes and thoughts danced between the light in the foreground and the light beyond the hill, I began to realize there might be two sources of light. Further meditation of this unique possibility, provided these additional thoughts: The light of God's presence is both a present and future reality. The Psalmist stated, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." How glad I am that God provides all the light I need for my daily journey which is ultimately leading to the light of His eternal presence. For me, that is what the brilliant distant light in this painting represents; my eternal destiny. As I focus, once again, on the foreground, I am mindful that someone has gone before me, setting the steps in place. My Good Shepherd is the One who has done so, and, I am standing there somewhere with Him, on one of those steps, in the journey of life. Although I don't know which of those steps I am on, I rejoice in knowing, the One who has set my course continues to provide the light of His presence every step of the way. What about you, my friend? Do you know the One who loves you with an eternal love and, desires to walk with you every step of your life's journey? I hope you do, and look forward to meeting you, on the other side of the hill.
